Express Entry is Canada’s electronic system for managing skilled worker immigration applications. It covers three federal economic programs — the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) — and ranks candidates using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). How Express Entry Works

Express Entry manages three main federal programs:

The system uses the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to rank every candidate in the pool. Higher-scoring candidates receive Invitations to Apply during regular draws.

Online Profiles and Eligibility

Create an online profile providing details on your education, work experience, language proficiency, and other factors.
Your eligibility is assessed to determine which program(s) you qualify for.

Invitations to Apply (ITA)

Candidates are ranked in the pool based on their CRS score.
The highest-scoring candidates receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.

Expression of Interest and Invitation Rounds

Your profile acts as an Expression of Interest (EOI) in Canadian permanent residence.
IRCC runs regular Invitation Rounds — general, program-specific, and category-based draws.

Submission Process

Submit your Application for Permanent Residence (APR) once invited.
Complete additional steps: medical exams, police certificates, and biometrics.

Profile Validity and Costs

An Express Entry profile is valid for 12 months.
Creating a profile is free, though you’ll incur costs for language exams, credential assessments, translations, and other administrative fees.

Hiring Representatives and Job Offers

Hiring a representative is optional but can be valuable for complex cases.
A job offer isn’t mandatory, but a valid one can significantly boost your CRS score.

Job Prospects and Family Inclusion

Express Entry immigrants generally report positive job prospects in Canada.
You can include your spouse and dependent children in your application.

CRS Score and How to Improve It

You can use IRCC’s official CRS tool to calculate your score. Common ways to improve it include claiming every eligible point, retaking language tests for a higher band, gaining additional education, acquiring more skilled work experience, and studying or working in Canada before applying.

Express Entry vs. Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)

Express Entry is managed by the federal government and ranks candidates purely on CRS score. A Provincial Nominee Program lets a province — such as Alberta through streams like the Alberta Opportunity Stream — nominate candidates based on regional economic needs, adding 600 CRS points and effectively guaranteeing an ITA. You can join the Express Entry pool first, then update your profile if a province nominates you.

Valid Job Offers and LMIA

A valid job offer must be full-time, at least one year in duration, and fall under an eligible NOC category. Some job offers are exempt from requiring a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), depending on the employer and occupation.

Entering the Pool and Language Tests

It’s free to enter the Express Entry pool, and doing so is worthwhile even with a modest CRS score, since cut-off scores change with each draw. Language requirements are measured using Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels and vary by program — most require a minimum of CLB 7 in each ability area.

Profile Submission Requirements

To submit your profile, you’ll need a valid passport, language test results, proof of Canadian education or an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) report, and documentation showing sufficient settlement funds. You can determine your NOC code using the official National Occupational Classification matrix.

After Receiving an ITA

Once you receive an Invitation to Apply, IRCC will request specific documents to complete your permanent residence application, including proof of settlement funds where applicable.
